When I first moved into my new apartment, I wanted desperately to do complete bathroom remodeling for both bathrooms. The bathrooms in the apartment were last renovated in the 1980s! And it looked old, worn down and in serious need of an uplift, particularly the bathroom in the master bedroom. I suppose that the bathroom in the master bedroom had been used more than the other one. It seemed that a complete make-over in the order of bathroom remodeling was needed.

So I called a contractor, who scared with descriptions of hacking up bathroom tiles, dragging the broken tiles and concrete from the bathroom through my living space and out of the house - all done within one NOISY week. Then scared me even more with the price. One complete bathroom remodeling for a bathroom was approximately $6000-$7000. And I do believe that price quote was on the low end.

I had to look to alternative solutions to give the bathrooms a make-over. I found out that brilliant paint work for the walls, cabinet replacements and other affordable changes can make a difference to the overall look of the bathroom. For instance, with my small changes, the bathroom tiles were no longer looking as bad as I had initially thought, in fact, they were in pretty good condition after all.

An effective decoration of a room largely depends on its size and shape and mainly the purpose for which it is going to be used. A small office space beneath the stairs or a formal dining area in a separate place by itself. The use of colors also has a telling impact on the atmosphere of a room. If not judiciously used a large room may look small and cold; if judiciously used a small room can be made to look larger and warmer. The wall art and other accessories in the living room sets its ambience. The more uncluttered the room the more comfortable it is to live in and spend time.

Keep picture sizes small wherever possible, or maybe a large one in one of the larger walls. Avoid substantially large pictures as far as possible. A two-seater settee, rather than a three-seater will create an impression of space. Mirrors are good accessories as long as they are placed in strategic positions as they refract light around the room.

Living room decorating ideas evolve and change from year to year and is sometimes set by the leading interior decorators. But it is best to look at what they have to offer and go by your instincts. It is "your" living room. And the choice of colors and accessories so wide that it is fairly impossible to get to know them. Understand what the primary, the secondary and the tertiary colors are, the color wheel and the basic principles of mixing them and you can come up with shades that could better the display in a paint store.

Blue is the most preferred color. Think of blue and the first thing that comes to your mind is the blue sky or the blue sea that instills a sense of serenity and tranquillity to your mind; and a living room is just where such an atmosphere should prevail. It is left to your creativeness, your imagination and your ingenuity as to how you decorate your living room. Close your eyes and imagine what kind f environment you would like to come to and plan your décor accordingly. Once you have settled on the colors for the walls and the ceiling, think of the colors for the doorways and the windows. Proceed step by step. Next comes the furniture which should complement the color scheme and finally comes the accessories like the mirrors, the carpets, the flower vases and the flowers etc.

This site focuses on interior design (for your home and mine). Interior design impacts the value of our homes as perceived by us and by others. But before we get into the thick of things, let me tell you how I developed an interest in interior design.

First off, my home is not a mansion. It is a two bedroom apartment in a medium-rise building. It is a typical city living abode that acts as my sanctuary away from the urban jungle out there.

One of the things that drew me to the apartment was the view - the living room has large windows on two walls. The first window shows off the city view. And the second (my favorite) overlooks a garden that contains huge trees. In the summer, when I look out of that second window, I see greenery all about me. The tree tops are just about the reach of my apartment window. So much so that I can imagine being in a cabin out in a cool place in New Hampshire or the like!

The people who lived in the apartment before me did a lousy job though of decorating the place. They used horrid furniture, painted the walls colors that were much too bright. For instance, the living room walls were a brilliant yellow, the master bedroom was a deep blue, and the guest bedroom a lime green. It was like being hit by a kaleidoscope of confusing colors as I ventured from room to room. Lucky for the view and the layout of the place, or else I would have walked away and not bought the place!

But anyway, this is my humble adobe as I had viewed it then.

Interior designing was a lot harder than I bargained for. However, I did not wish to hire an interior deigner because I did not have the means to do so, like so many regular folks out there!
